Positive Transitions: Develop is our Stage 2 group employability programme and is open to anyone aged 16-24 who is not in education, employment or training. This course runs for 8 weeks with 4 sessions a week.
One session per week will be your focussed skills session; here you will work together as a group on a series of team challenges designed to build a variety of basic employability skills (transferable or ‘meta’ skills) such as communication, creative thinking, problem solving, initiative and leadership. You will achieve your Personal Development Award: Self in Work (level 3) from this part of the course.
The other 3 sessions will be media based with a session each on Radio Broadcasting, TV/Film Production and Digital Music. Here at shmu, we use media as tools to build skills and overcome barriers, in particular building your confidence to be able to progress on your employability journey. You will achieve National 3 Media qualification from this part of the course.
In radio you will work as a team learning how to put together a radio show; what you can and cannot do/say on air, planning, scripting and ultimately broadcasting your finished show live on shmuFM (our community radio station which broadcasts on FM across Aberdeen, and online globally).
In TV/Film Production you will work together to create one or more short video pieces which will be shared across our relevant social media platforms.
In digital music, you will work together to create an audio piece, this could be rap, spoken word, instrumental and may link into either your radio or TV/Film project.
Everything you do in your week will be about building skills, we will support you to identify the skills you are developing and help you to understand how these skills will be useful and relevant in all jobs and careers. You will also have the opportunity to attend a variety of employability visits planned during your time at shmu – including employer visits, workplace visits, recruitment fairs or events.
