shmuTRAIN – Discover is our Stage 1 employability programme, funded through Aberdeenshire Council and is open to any young people aged 16-24 not in education, training or employment.

This programme is for you if you’re not quite ready to move into work or training right now, but would like to start working towards it.

On this programme you will work 1:1 with one of our Employability Support Workers, who will support you to explore the barriers you are facing and develop an action plan and some goals to achieve during your time with us. You will work together taking part in activities that will support you to overcome these barriers and to move forward. This could include confidence building, small team work skills, communication skills and many others. You will also explore a variety of progression options and career paths, discovering the best options for you, your skills and abilities.

Here at shmu, we use media (film/TV, radio/podcasting, music, and blogging) as tools to build skills and overcome barriers, so as part of your programme with us you will also work with one of our media tutors on an exciting media projects.  This could be anything from creating your own short film, podcast or radio show or you could be more interested in the technical side learning editing skills and sound production. Your Employability Support Worker will work with you as you discover and develop your new skills and will support you to recognise and celebrate them.

You will also have the opportunity to work towards SQA accredited qualifications during your time with us, securing qualifications including National 3 Media and Personal Development Awards (Level 3).

Following this course you could progress on to our Stage 2 Positive Transitions employability programme, or move on to another employability providers training programme, college or even directly into employment.

Here's something you should know

Info Box

Employability programmes work a little differently from other courses, especially when it comes to eligibility. For example, someone from Glasgow wouldn't be eligible for a programme taking place in North Ayrshire, and vice versa. Check the Postcode Eligibility tab in the Things to Know section to make sure this programme is open to you.
