Employability programmes work a little differently from other courses, especially when it comes to eligibility. For example, someone from Glasgow wouldn't be eligible for a programme taking place in North Ayrshire, and vice versa. Check the Postcode Eligibility tab in the Things to Know section to make sure this programme is open to you.

About this programme

Positive Transitions: Succeed is our Stage 3 group employability programme and is open to anyone aged 16-24 who is not in education, employment or training. This course runs for 12 weeks with 5 sessions a week.

As this is our Stage 3 programme this course has a strong employability focus and is created to support you to move directly into employment if appropriate but can also support you to progress into further education or training.

On this course you will have 2 dedicated employability sessions each week, focussing on core employability skills such as CV building, Interview skills, Job search skills and careers information and decision making. Towards the end of the course you will have dedicated job search sessions where support staff will be on hand to help with job searching and completing applications. As and when you are successful in securing a job interview, you will have 1:1 interview coaching to prepare you (this is in addition to general interview skills sessions). You will also have a range of visits planned during the course, meeting employers from different industries to learn and explore different job and career options. You will achieve the SQA accredited Employability Award (level 3 or 4) from this part of the course.

Here at shmu, we use media as a tool to build skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving and confidence. You will have 3 sessions a week dedicated to media activities; Radio Broadcasting, TV/Film Production and Digital Music. As an SQA accredited centre we have a variety of Level 5 media qualifications available and you will be supported to achieve NPA units in Radio and/or TV Production as part of your course.

In Radio you will work as a team learning how to put together a radio show; you will start with basic training on Ofcom guidelines and how to use the studio. You will then work together on planning, scripting and ultimately broadcasting a live show every week on shmuFM. Covering a variety of topics you will need to work together to agree on a theme for the show and complete your own piece of research to contribute.

In TV/Film Production you will work together to create one or more short video pieces which will be shared across our relevant social media platforms. We have many live projects running at shmu that our participants can get involved in – a past group created an information film for NHS Grampian for example.

In digital music, you will work together to create an audio piece, this could be rap, spoken word, instrumental and may link into either your radio or TV/Film project.

Everything you do in your week will be about building skills, we will support you to identify the skills you are developing and help you to understand how these skills will be useful and relevant in all jobs and careers.

On completion of the course you may move directly into employment – in fact you may progress into employment before your 12 weeks are complete! This does not mean your time with shmu is over – we will be here to support you in your transition into work to ensure you have the best chance of sustaining your position. If there are any teething problems at your job, we will be there to help. Alternatively you may progress into further or higher education or training, again we will be here to support you beyond your course end date to make this change smoothly.
