Info Box

Employability programmes work a little differently from other courses, especially when it comes to eligibility. For example, someone from Glasgow wouldn't be eligible for a programme taking place in North Ayrshire, and vice versa. Check the Postcode Eligibility tab in the Things to Know section to make sure this programme is open to you.

About this programme

How much does it cost for a new laptop?  For this qualification where you will work towards a Personal Development Award about Environmental Issues at the same time, you will learn how to revamp an old laptop and why doing so helps to save money and the environment.

We will take you through how to diagnose hardware and research what components are required to upgrade the laptop. Stages of upgrade covered are from diagnosis to installing/factory reset of Windows or other OS. You’ll be shown how to remove backplates and covers from laptops, allowing access to the hard drive/SSD compartment and the RAM modules. Safety precautions such as removing the battery, unplugging charger from the wall and static discharge will be covered.

You will also be learning why doing this is more cost effective and more environmentally friendly than outright replacing your old laptop with a new one. This will include what sort of impact waste has on the environment and just how much more expensive paying for a new laptop is when you can instead pay a lot less for new components and update your current laptop, not needing to throw it away anymore.
